Uses

Vildagliptin is used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is prescribed alongside diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes.

How Vildagliptin works Vildagliptin is an antidiabetic medication that increases the release of insulin from the pancreas while decreasing the hormones that elevate blood sugar levels. This action helps to lower both fasting and post-meal sugar levels.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Vildagliptin include headache, dizziness, hypoglycemia (low blood glucose level), nausea, weight gain, and tremors.

Expert Advice

  • Vildagliptin should be taken at the same time every day to help you remember to take it.
  • It may cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar level) when used with other antidiabetic medicines, alcohol, or if you delay or miss a meal.
  • Always carry some sugary food or fruit juice with you in case you experience hypoglycemia symptoms, such as:
    • Cold sweats
    • Cool, pale skin
    • Tremor
    • Anxiety
  • Be cautious while driving or operating machinery until you know how Vildagliptin affects you.
  • Your doctor may check your kidney and liver function before starting treatment and regularly thereafter.
  • Inform your doctor if you develop symptoms such as:
    • Abdominal pain
    • Fatigue
    • Loss of appetite
    • Darkened urine
    • Yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice)
  • You should continue to exercise regularly, eat a healthy diet, and take your other diabetes medicines along with this medicine.
  • Chances of weight gain and low blood sugar are lower compared to other diabetes medicines.
  • Inform your doctor if you notice joint pains or develop symptoms such as:
    • Stomach pain
    • Nausea
    • Vomiting
  • Monitor your blood sugar level regularly while taking this medicine.
